A Lethal Obsession

A former USIA analyst has a warrant for his arrest over the suspected murder of five police officers in Makade County, Greater Los Suenos. Gerard Scott, 55, waited out the front of East Makade Police Department with a loaded Mini-14 after setting a car alight on the street in front of the department. He then shot at officers while they attempted to extinguish the alighted vehicle. Witnesses on the street reported his vehicle as he drove away.

A Lethal Obsession is the fifth mission in Ready or Not. A former USIA analyst has a warrant for his arrest over the murder of five police officers.

Mission Brief

Team Lead: Alright, boys, listen up. We all heard about the shooting down at the Makade station. We've got three officers fighting for their lives and three who have already lost theirs. But, we have something else too. We've got the name and probable location of the son-of-a-bitch who did this. We've also got the pleasure of being the ones who get to get him.

Settle down. What we know about the events earlier today is that Gerard Scott set up an ambush by lighting a car on fire near the Makade station. He lay in wait, and when the police arrived, he opened fire on them with a rifle. Scott then fled the scene in an RV. A member of the public who was nearby when the shooting started got the license plate, which we've traced to a compound up on Sullivan's Slope. Scott's details are coming through to your tablets. We don't know much about this guy. He used to work for the USIA in an office-based role. He has no family, no friends, and apparently, no known acquaintances. He wasn't even known to us until today. We've got nothing to work with. No motive no history with law enforcement. All we know is that this guy likes to keep to himself. He's already shown he's not afraid to shoot at cops, so I doubt he's going to welcome up with open arms. Be careful up there. I do not want to be responsible for the Chaplain showing up at anyone else's wife's door today.

I understand that emotions are going to be, but we do not know what we are walking into. I want us to be swift and sensible. He's shown that he has serious firepower, and we need to be ready for anything. Something triggered him, and that makes him a very dangerous individual.

East Makade Station 911 Call

Officer: 15-L-32, priority!

Dispatch: 15-L-32, go ahead.

Officer: I've got multiple officers down outside of the East Makade station. Suspect is at large, location unknown. Get me backup and medics here. Code 3, get me SWAT!

Dispatch: All units on the channel, 15-L-32 reporting multiple officers down at East Makade station, requesting back up code 3, unknown location of suspect.

Level Layout

The level is small, taking place exclusively in Gerard's cabin. The cabin is three-stories tall, featuring at least four different entrances: the front door, the ground floor, the lower backyard, and the upper backyard. Explosive booby traps are set up on almost every door in the level, so using a mirror gun and withholding the use of breaching tools without checking for traps is highly advised.

Only three suspects will always be present on the map: Gerard Scott and two of his accomplices. While it is common for a couple of suspects to be either on the first or second floor with one suspect inside the basement, sometimes all suspects will be present on the same floor.

First Floor

The first floor can be entered from the front or back of the house. The front door is accessed by walking up the first set of outdoor stairs the player comes across. The area behind the front door is very small and tight, and leads to the basement stairs, kitchen, living room, and a small bedroom. The stolen federal documents, the mission's only soft objective, are located in the kitchen. A projector is running a slideshow of photographs of unknown places and people with their faces crossed out and symbols added. There is a small vent that suspects can hide in, as well as spaces in the wall that suspects can move through.

Second Floor

The second floor separates into two rooms, and leads to the outdoor balcony. The second floor can be accessed from the first floor stairway, or from the back of the cabin. When entering the second floor from the stairs, suspects at this level may see the team from behind the view of the stairs or from outside on the balcony as there is a window behind the stair view. A team that cannot react quickly enough to these hazards may find themselves gunned down quickly.

Basement

The basement can be accessed from the first floor, or from an exterior door located under the deck that leads to the front door. Inside is where Scott experiments with weaponized ricin. The basement has a smaller room which has a door and a small space in the wall which suspects can travel through.

Gerard Scott's Cabin

Scott's cabin is messy and unorganized, featuring nondescript drawings and writings on the walls, corkboards with various connections, papers tossed everywhere, tinfoil applied on nearly every surface, and ricin experiments on the ground floor.

The drawings on the wall, as well as one of the tapes found next to a bed indicate that Gerard Scott suffers from intense paranoia, if not full psychosis or even schizophrenia, as the drawings mainly depict several conspiracy theories, ranging from the injection of "slime" into the eyeballs of the general population, programs of mass populational surveillance, and even police and federal agents being mind controlled by a secretive, satanic upper echelon of the U.S government.

However, the drawings on the walls and boards around the house also highlight Gerard Scott's intellect, as they showcase complex mathematical equations and chemical formulas, normally reserved to higher academic and professional environments.

Gerard Scott's equipment, which consist of an improvised ghillie camouflage hood and an automatic assault rifle as well as the paintings on the walls also hint at him having some form of recreational hunting, military and/or law enforcement training. He is experienced with the gear utilized, as he knows where the LSPD SWAT and normal police officers are more vulnerable to be shot at and the quality of their ballistic armor and their available gear. These paintings also hint at him having done other types of work for the USIA beyond analysis, most likely on the field or in logistics.

One of the audio tapes found close to a computer on the upper floor also hint at Gerard Scott knowing D Platoon member Judge to some extent, as he claims to have seen his methodology and training, as well as claiming to "know what kind of man he is", thinking that both he and Judge are "part of the cycle....in a never-ending game". This could also hint at Gerard Scott being a former LSPD SWAT Officer, or at the very least hinting at him serving with Judge in the LSPD.

The writings on the ground floor lab's whiteboard indicate that Gerard and his accomplice were working on a type of aerosol bomb, which would be either remote controlled or timed. However, by the time the SWAT Team raids the cabin, they had been unable to confirm the ricin's effect on humans but had already tested the ricin on local fauna, indicated by the whiteboard writings and reinforced by the presence of empty animal cages near the lab.

Evidence

USIA Challenge Coin: A rare metal challenge coin gifted to members of the USIA upon completion of service, this version has been discontinued for many years.

Ricin Spray: A creation of Gerard and his young accomplices, a processed ricin spray device capable of causing devastating effects to persons exposed to its mist. It is extremely toxic when inhaled or having prolonged exposure to the poison, a fatal dose capable of killing an adult in 36-72 hours. It appears Gerard had plans to mail these to specific individuals in senior law enforcement positions across Los Suenos.

All Eyes On Me: Gerard kept tabs on the LSPD's every move, throughout the department website's short history before deletion Gerard saved hundreds of unlisted images from their pages, particularly ones from D-Platoon SWAT. After the Ridgeline incident it was discovered Gerard printed numerous images of individual D-Platoon members, including the team leader, David "Judge" Beaumont.

Trivia

• Two of the suspects wear gas masks but these are purely cosmetic; CS gas will still take effect as if they are not wearing gas masks.
• Gerald Scott can be easily identified by his ghillie suit and him being naked underneath it.
• This is the only mission in the game that does not have civilians present.
• The map is internally known as "Ridgeline" and referred to as such in the game files.
• The map appears to be a reference to the siege of Ruby Ridge.
  • Although, Gerard Scott himself appears to be a reference to the Unabomber (Ted Kaczynski).
