Seized data-center assets point to the owner operating in one of the poorest neighborhoods: The Row. SWAT have been deployed to serve a search warrant on the Brixley Talent Time to assist with investigations into an illicit pornography ring.

Description of "The Spider"

The Spider is the fourth playable mission in Ready or Not. Hard drives seized during a raid on the apartment of Michael Williams contained child pornography which implicated Brixley’s Talent Time in a child pornography ring. D-Platoon have been dispatched to serve a high risk arrest warrant for George Brixley. Seemingly unaware of this development, Brixley continues to groom potential clients - But, forever unwilling to take any chances, has hired several low lives as armed security. Alerted by the arrival of the LSPD, Brixley and his men have barricaded themselves inside, holding several civilians hostage.

Mission Brief[]

Team Lead: Alright – everybody ready to roll! So if you guys haven’t been told yet, CID finally received the decrypted metadata from those marked Mindjot drives that we seized a week or so ago. The data from the images on the drives corroborates information our guys have put together on a small operation running out of The Row. We’re heading over to 7408 Martinez Boulevard with a warrant for the arrest of George Brixley. Current intel: our target has a prior conviction for kidnapping – did some time in Leavenworth, about three years. He also has a prior felony for conspiracy and sexual assault, he’s not going to want to go back to jail. Brixley has firearms training, and we assume he’s going to be armed. The structure we will be entering has some quirks to it – Jackson, the intel you gathered last night, what’s up with this place?

Officer: He’s running some sort of talent agency, round-the-clock, all week. Weekends are his busiest times, so minimum one female in the building, likely more. Could be children, too.

Team Lead: OK, so we could have kids in there. Moving on, the structure has three known entrances: one on the main road, side one, that goes through the reception, one on the third side of the building, and one on the fourth side. We don’t know much about the internal space, floor plans we’ve got are from the former owners of the building who had it set up as a clinic. Speaking of clinics, medical: we’ll have R-A’s on-scene, as well as pediatric ambulances in case there are any kids. Primary hospital is gonna be YMH, secondary if we have multiple patients is going to be Coastal Grove Medical Center.

Team Lead: For radio, we’re gonna be operating on Tac-5 Central Tactical, make sure your radios are set to Tac-5. Backup channel’s gonna be Tac-1.

OK – question time. Anyone?

Officer: What’s our go for use of NFDD's?

Team Lead: Interior deployment is authorized based on assessed need. Bang a room if you have to. Anyone else?

Perfect. Alright, let’s go. Remember to watch your mouth, everything is being recorded - all the time.

Homeless Complaint[]

A complaint tipping off the LSPD about armed [...].

Officer: Sir, take a step back. Back it up.

Homeless Man: Hey man I’m trying to fuckin' tell you something here.

Officer: Whatever you have to say, you can say further away from me. What’s up?

Homeless Man: I’ve been on this block for years, man. Don’t talk to me like I’m some kind of fuckin’ dope fiend. This my shit! This! Is! MY! SHIT! You best come correct whe-

Officer: Sir, calm down. What did you wanna tell me?

Homeless Man: This fat motherfucker man, he has women of all kinds stepping into this joint all day. Kids too, mostly. If I had a phone I’d have called you a long time ago. It ain’t right.

Officer: Is that it? You came over here to tell me women and kids are entering a crummy talent agency?

Homeless Man: That ain’t it, buster. There’s more to it. Every Sunday I’ve seen these men show up, haulin' all kinds of shit in there. No doubt, they are strapped. Now I seen ‘em enter this morning. They’re still in there, and you dumb motherfuckers are out here making all this noise, getting whoever is in there real fucking antsy. I’m giving you a warning, man. If you’re settin' up to enter this place, you better have the whole fuckin' military with you.

Officer: Thanks for the warning, pal. I’ll take it to the Chief right away. Maybe you can get a medal or something. Maybe we can get a medal for you and all your buddies here.

Homeless Man: You got a smart mouth. See how it plays out for you, boy.

The Map[]

The map itself consists of four areas: The street outside, Brixley Talent Time, a U4 Convivence Store and a courtyard that connects both buildings.

The Street[]

The Street is the maps insertion point. In Single Player, it is entirely absent of enemies or civilian NPCs (with the occasional exception of one homeless man), presumably having been evacuated by the LSPD. As part of the Row, the street Brixley’s Talent Time sits on is filthy and dilapidated. Months worth of trash have accumulated on the curb and makeshift tents of the city’s homeless litter the sidewalk.

An abandoned Debanco Security truck can be found, along with picket signs protesting Senator Fremont’s Veterans funding cut bill, foreshadowing the level Ides of March.

From the street, the player can gain entry to the U4 Convenience Store, which is directly right of their insertion point, which will lead them into the back section of the court yard. Entrance to Brixley Talent Time can be gained from the far side of the street, which has been barricaded by the LSPD - Preventing players from leaving the map.

The courtyard can be entered directly from the the fence between two buildings.

Convenience Store[]

The Convenience Store is much smaller than the one in "Thank You, Come Again". The publicly accessible portion of the premises comprises only of a small store. Despite the dilapidated surroundings, the store is in decent condition, although a shotgun under the counter suggest it is a common target of robberies. In the back of the store is a hallway which leads to storage, a locker room and toilets, through which, the courtyard can also be accessed.

It is absent of civilians, and enemies will never spawn inside on Single Player, but depending on the actions of the players and NPCs, suspects may take refuge inside during a firefight.

Courtyard[]

The courtyard is connected to both buildings, and the roof to Brixley’s Talent Time is accessible via a fire escape, giving an additional point of entry, The Courtyard itself is covered with bags of trash, abandoned cars and what seems to be another homeless camp. It is often inhabited with at least 2-4 enemies and commonly the player will also encounter civilians here.

It is not recommended that new players chose the courtyard as their first entry point, as firefights in this open space can quickly get out of hand, especially if there are enemies on the roof. Guards inside the building, including Brixley himself, will often run outside to assist their colleagues.

Brixley Talent Time[]

Brixley Talent Time itself is situated inside a disused Needle Depository, The Martinez Safe Injection Clinic. Used as front for Talent Scouting, this place is a breeding ground for exploitation, fraud and sexual assault. The building itself is in a complete state of disrepair, littered with clutter along with signage and paraphilia of the premises previous tenants.

The lobby of the building can be accessed from the front street, and is usually populated by at least 2 enemies. The bulletproof glass booth can prove hazardous if a guard is standing inside it, but it is never-the-less usually the easiest point to gain entry.

Inside the reception there are usually several female civilians. When arrested, they will say various interesting things. (E.g; "Just get my children out of here!" or "I just want a future for my boy!") Be warned, as guards often patrol this area, and may hit the civilians. The receptionist may also be found here, but she is still regarded as a civilian and not a suspect.

There is a children’s waiting room containing discarded toys, clothes, games and clothes. The walls are plastered in posters and children’s headshots. There is a casting room, called the "Smile Room", which contains some unnerving imagery of smiling faces and more children’s headshots. It is connected to Brixley’s office, where the player will usually encounter him.

Brixley will almost always take his own life when players or their team members enter the room unless he has first been pacified by using CS gas, flashbangs, tasers or pepper spray. This will not fail the mission, but will result in a bad rating. This is more likely to happen if players enter the building through the courtyard, as Brixley often joins the firefight and fires at players, before turning the gun on himself when his henchmen are killed or pacified.

Inside Brixley’s office, among various unnerving imagery of children, is a computer containing an open chat window with Amos Voll. The chatlog implicates Brixley in supplying Voll with children for his pedophile ring.

Connections To Other Maps[]

23 Megabytes A Second (Streamer): The hard drives found in the server room directly implicates that Brixley Talent Time is in a child pornography ring.

Sinuous Trail (Mindjot Data Center): On one of the computer screens, Mindjot’s logo can be found.

Valley Of the Dolls (Voll Health House): Message between George Brixley and Amos Voll can be found on a computer.

Hide and Seek: The mission name "The Spider" refers to the Human Traffickers in Port Hokan, implying a connection. This is enforced by paperwork found at the port which shows that many of the slaver’s victims are in fact minors.

Evidence[]

  • Old Pamphlet: An old advertising pamphlet from the early 2000’s, highlighting the purpose of this clinic and its value to the city. Clearly, this didn’t work out well, as the structure has since been repurposed by new owners.
  • Scheduling Book: A leather-bound book with tattered edges, documenting appointments at Brixley Talent Time. The documentation is for the month of February. Forensics analysis of the writing points towards a likelihood that this was written by Brixley.
  • Mysterious Inquiry: A crumpled letter discovered in a dumpster outside of the Brixley Talent Time building. Inside, a cryptic letter has been carefully flattened out. A series of wax seals are visible on the letter. The letter includes a series of linked wax seals with cryptic images. The images on the seals include such things as a dead dog, a burning man, redwood tree, and a boat on a dock. The words on the letter are a garbled mess, but some words on the edges of the paper are clear; STAIRCASE, AUTHORITY, VOLL, EYE, CONTROL, STYX, and BRIXLEY.
    • This evidence has a passage written in Latin:
      • “lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisici dit, sed eiusmod tempor incidunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. utenim ad minim veniam, quis nostrued exercitation ullamco laboris nix ut aliquid ex en commodi consequat. luis aute iure reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. excepteur sint obcaecat cupiditat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit a nim id est laborum.” Directly translated, it says:
        • “He says that the pain is great, and that it will be followed by the adipisc, but it happens at the same time as some great labor and pain. If I come to the least, who nostrued the exercise of any work in the snow as a result of some advantage. but he will rebuke him rightly in pleasure; unless they are blinded by desire, they do not go forth; they are in fault who abandon their duties.”
        • The first phrase on this letter is “Lorem ipsum.” This is a phrase used to identify placeholder text, so it is most likely the passage on the letter holds no significance.
    • A card attached to the letter says “TCAIDORSD DCINOREUSDE AHTUORITY OBSEVRE GHINBDNEIDN TUOLCNR EYNOIBVSREVED RNTEOVSERE HNGILD RAELVLETD DOWTHE YXISTN 37”. It has yet to be determined if this phrase is a code for something, or simply placeholder text.

Trivia[]

  • In the beta version, the guards at Brixley’s talent time were employed by Bolton Security, who were also hired by Amos Voll on the level Valley of the Dolls, though with some extra variants (one of them wearing a Balaclava and Kevlar vest). In the final version, the majority of the guards appear to be petty criminals employed by Brixley. Many use the same models as the extra robbers on Thank You, Come Again and the shooters in Elephant.
    • It’s implied that the petty criminals are actually Bolton Security but undercover or wearing it due to the weather. Most of the suspects have ear pieces like Bolton Security, and voice lines in the final version imply they were sent by Voll to pick up a payment from Brixley. Furthermore, in the Valley of the Dolls briefing, it’s stated that the suspects arrested at the talent agency are the same guys stationed at Voll’s house.
    • If you listen closely to the arrest dialogue, one of them will say they are a "private investigator".
  • There are at least two Bolton guards present in the final version, apparently to collect headshots for Amos Voll as evidenced by notes found in Brixley’s Office.
    • It’s implied that the two guards are Eddie and Lewis.
  • One method of containing suspects inside is to wedge all of the entrances, and enter the building from the roof. The simple layout of the map makes this strategy very quick to perform. The close quarters layout of the building makes CS gas a very effective tool when pacifying suspects.
  • The music played in the reception area of Brixley Talent Time is a piano rendition of Ave Maria (Bach/Gounod), originally composed by Charles Gounod in 1853.
